Whitetip Reef Sharks Under Cargo Pier at Midway Atoll

These are two Whitetip reef sharks that can be regularly seen while snorkeling under the cargo pier at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. The sharks are resting in about 4-ft of water. Whitetips unlike many other species of sharks do not need to constantly be moving and are able to lay motionless on the sand flats. For at least the last 12 years there have been a group of two or three whitetips (most likely many different individuals) that can be found resting under the cargo Pier at Midway and have been validating the Northwest Hawaiian Islands waters as a haven for marine predators.
